Freeway Poems

I find that it is always a good idea to keep a pen and something to write on almost everywhere I go. This means that when I am driving down the freeway at ludicrous speed, I don't have to lean over to the glove box and take my eyes off the road, thereby hurtling in to a median and...well, you get the idea. Instead, I have a pad of paper and a pen sticking out of it on the seat of the car, one next to my bed, and one in my desk drawer at work. This way, when inspiration strikes, like an irritating mosquito, I can Deet that bad boy with a quick swish. Like today.

The pen takes my hand
Holds it lightly at first,
Then crushing the little finger
It demands motion
Expression
The ink
Crawls out of the pen like a demon
Skittering
Moaning
From light to dark
Clawing marks into the paper as it goes
The milky mud of creation comes alive
On the page
We finish this thought together
The demon and I.
